Andrea Neski of Ossining signed her letter of intent for soccer Wednesday. She will be going to Philadelphia University.

In late September, I featured Neski in a notebook. Here is part of the post:

Ossining senior Andrea Neski has committed to play soccer for Philadelphia University, a Division II school.

“I really like the coach; I got a really good impression of him,” she said, referring to Philadelphia University girls soccer coach George Dunbar. “I thought he had a really unique look on the game, and I liked what he had to say.”

The high-scoring forward’s options included SUNY-Stony Brook, SUNY-Albany, and Monmouth University. Ultimately, her conversation with Dunbar, as well as the university’s location, swayed her decision.

“It’s 10 minutes outside the city, so it’s got the campus life,” she said. “But it’s also got the city right there, so it’s got the best of both.

“I’m a little nervous because I’ve gone to see them play, and they’re a great team. But I’m excited, and I’m looking forward to all the opportunities that are in front of me.”

Neski said she was considering majoring in communications or public relations.

Forward/midfielder Lia Bellizzi is transferring to Providence College after playing her freshman and sophomore seasons at the University of Virginia. Bellizzi attended Rye High School and scored 93 career goals for the Garnets. She finished with 239 career points.

Bellizzi will be eligible to play in the fall. She will be joined at Providence by John Jay standout Hannah Wear.

Bronxville takes on Section 4 champion Oneonta Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Greene High School. This is Bronxville’s third year in a row making the regional final. Last year, the Broncos made it all the way to the state semifinals before losing to the eventual state champion in Class B.

Despite graduating eight seniors last season, the Broncos had a stellar regular season, which earned them the No. 2 seed in the section playoffs. Following a 110-minute clash with a strong Pleasantville squad that resulted in Bronxville advancing via penalty kicks, the Broncos charged past Lourdes, North Salem and Albertus Magnus en route to the section title.

In their 4-2 win over Spackenkill in the regional semifinals, Bronxville took it to the opponent right away, scoring seven minutes into the game on a perfectly executed counterattack. Killian Donohue (one goal, two assists) and Lucy Kohlhoff (three goals) had superb games, and the defense kept a fast Spackenkill offense at bay for basically the entire game. Aislinn Speranza, an ultra-quick forward with great change-of-direction ability, had her array of moves to the goal constantly foiled by Bronxville’s defenders.

The Broncos really pack the middle well. Meredith Donovan is great at center back. Elise Weir and Taylor Sears are versatile and quick on the outside. Claire MacMillan-Bell presents a physical presence in the middle, and the other mids constantly come down to help out. Charley Warble is a savvy goalkeeper with great awareness.

Oneonta will of course present a new challenge. Oneonta was ranked No. 1 in the Class B statewide rankings at one point this year, though that ranking is hardly definitive or predictive considering how these teams change throughout the year. Still, it indicates that this game will likely be incredibly competitive.

“I know they’re strong, well-prepared,” Bronxville coach Don Cupertino said. ”Got a couple good midfielders, got a good forward. I think they’re 17-2 or something like that.”

No injuries to report on Bronxville. They’ll be going in as healthy as can be this late in the season.

“Obviously playing those two games Friday and Saturday, it wasn’t easy, but their fitness has been very good throughout the year,” Cupertino said.

If Bronxville wins, they will play in the state semifinals on Saturday.

After all the delays, we finally got to see the sectional finals and regional semis over the weekend. I was fortunate enough to be a spectator at five of the games; hopefully you caught some of the action, too.

We had six section champions for Section 1: Somers, Pearl River, Haldane, North Rockland, Bronxville and Arlington. I’d imagine we haven’t seen six champs in a while, but in this wild year with a bunch of great teams, it’s an apt conclusion to the season.

Somers-Pearl River was Section 1 soccer at its finest. Pearl River showed a lot of courage going up to Somers as the No.2 seed and having to essentially play an away game in front of an inspired Somers crowd. To be fair, the Pirates had a great showing from their faithful fans as well.

Marissa Scognamiglio to Casey Walsh — the dominant 1-2 punch for Pearl River all season — opened the scoring up, and Walsh provided insurance with her second goal early in the second half. But the Tuskers had the comeback of the year following the ejection of Carolyn Casey and coach Keenan Deegan with 26 minutes to go. They scored two goals in about five minutes and pushed it to OT, where they secured their place as co-champions with Pearl River.

North Rockland had a similar game against rival Arlington. The teams played even for 110 minutes and finished as co-champions. The Red Raiders put in a lot of work to get where they did.

Haldane’s technique-oriented game worked well in their victory over a strong Tuckahoe team. All year, the Blue Devils faced Class AA, A, and B teams to prepare them for the playoff atmosphere in November, and it paid off in sectionals.

Very sound team with much of their core coming back next year. They lost to S.S. Seward 3-0, but it was closer than the score indicated. Haldane will remember that game and continue building next year.

A young Bronxville team continued their run with a victory over Albertus Magnus in the Class B finals and a win over Spackenkill in the regional semis. They are the only team (at least in our coverage area) left playing, the only team with a chance to get to Cortlandt now. Unfortunately, I won’t be there to cover the game up at Greene High School near Vestal tomorrow, but the Broncos will no doubt represent the section well.
