Here is Jermaine Dennis’ story on Rye Country Day’s loss in FAA final.
Visiting Rye Country Day lost to Greenwich Academy 4-1 in the Fairchester Athletic Association final Friday, but RCDS coach Alin Andrei’s outlook remained positive.
The Gryphons (13-2-2) played without senior striker Stephanie Sabatini due to an injury she suffered during a match earlier in the week. Even with Sabatini sidelined, RCDS controlled much of the first half.
Taylor Regan gave the Gryphons a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half when she dribbled past two Greenwich defenders and scored on a 25-yard strike.
“They gave it all they had and did a great job in the first half,” Andrei said.
Greenwich scored five minutes into the second half to grab the momentum.
“G.A. is a good team and you have to give them that,” Andrei said. “They play really nice together and showed it today.”
Even though RCDS fell short of a title, Andrei reassured his team the season was a success. Andrei said he is ecstatic with the Gryphons’ first-place finish in the FAA in the regular season and looks to build upon it in 2014.
“We didn’t win today but we hope we can make it here again next year,” Andrei said. “We made it all the way to the FAA finals. I have to give my team a lot of credit for that.”
