The Kennedy girls soccer team completed its first season as a member of the CHSAA Archdiocese by winning the inter-city championship, defeating defending champion Notre Dame Academy 2-1 Saturday at Cardinal Spellman.
In doing so, the Gaels became the first squad from the Westchester/Bronx area to win the city title in the history of the Archdiocese.
“It feels about as good as it can feel,” Gaels coach Brent Tieber said. “Last year, we got knocked out of the Section 1 playoffs in the semifinals. We lost in penalty kicks. This has been a year in the making. They were a pretty good team.”
Kerry Brosnan scored the decisive goal in the first half. JoLyn Magnani also scored for Kennedy. Mackenzie Helsin-Scott made five saves.
Kennedy will begin play in the CHSAA Archdiocesan state championship tournament against the winner of Christ the King and Mary Louis. The Gaels’ game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
