I’m covering a playoff football game tonight, but check back here later tonight for all the scores, roundups and advancement information.
When Harrison was traveling to Nanuet for a Class A outbracket game, coach Jon–Erik Zappala noticed that some of the players were sleeping.
After an early arrival and a focused warmup, it quickly became apparent that his team was wide awake.
The No. 21-seeded Huskies carried their focus into the game and earned a 2-0 win over No. 12 Nanuet on Friday.
“As soon as the game started, they started to work together,” Zappala said. “It was an evenly matched game. It came down to finishing and that’s where we capitalized.”
Erica LaManna and Erin Nelson each scored a goal for Harrison. Gina Mancini had 13 saves in the win. Marissa D’Alessandro had 14 saves for Nanuet.
“Our defense played exceptionally well,” Zappala said. “If our defenders weren’t in the right place, Gia was. She had two major saves that were game-saving.”
For Zappala, the players reaction on the bus ride home showed their anticipation for tomorrow’s game against host No. 5 Panas at 3 p.m. in a semifinal game.
“They have never been as fired up on a bus ride back as they were after this game,” Zappala said. “They want to keep the momentum going and are ready for the challenge.”
