So yet another week goes by and….blah blah blah.
Listen, you get the idea. The girls of Section 1 have not disappointed on the playing field when it comes to impressive performances. Whether it was a monster, statistical game, or a key goal to help their teams to victory, the girls have not held back.
Take Cathriona Maguire’s three goals and two assists in Yonkers Montessori’s 6-1 win at Woodlands. Maguire opened up the game with a goal in the first five seconds. It was the third time this season she has netted a goal in the first five seconds of a contest.
Then there was Rye Country Day’s Tayor Regan who had two goals in wins against Hamden Hall and St. Luke’s to help the Wildcats remain undefeated.
Speaking of being undefeated, Briarcliff’s Lexi Grasso and Sophie Feuer accounted for six of the Bears’ eight goals in wins against Pearl River and Dobbs Ferry as Briarcliff continues its unbeaten streak this season.
It wasn’t just offense. Bronxville goalie Charley Warble made nine saves in each of the Broncos’ wins last week that helped them bounce back from losses to Pelham and Eastchester.
Still, I can’t pick ALL of them.
Melina Couzis, Somers—
Maybe it’s because Somers plays in the northernmost league in the section, spending most of its time in Dutchess County, or maybe it’s because the Tuskers’ have been winning the majority of their games in such convincing fashion, but last season’s Class A sectional runner up has seemingly flown under the radar this season.
Somers is putting the finishing touches on yet another impressive regular season. Last week proved to be another solid week as the Tuskers seemed dead set on proving their 1-0 loss to Lourdes was merely an outlier.
Interestingly enough, it wasn’t one of the members of Somers’ large junior class that had the most impressive week in the wins. It was Couzis, a freshman, who had multi-point games in wins against Ketcham (one goal, one assist) and John Jay-East Fishkill (two goals, one assist) from the midfield.
The center midfielder is part of a stable of playmakers the Tuskers have that should help them make another deep run in sectionals.
