Albertus Magnus’ Mikaela Connell scored on a through ball from Jacqueline Hennelly in the eighth minute of the Falcons’ game at Nyack Thursday.
Albertus then did what it does best, grinding out yet another one-goal win, this one coming in the form of a 1-0 victory.
“I think that’s definitely our mentality,” Falcons’ coach Tim Gavan said. “We’re going to be the blue-collar team that’s going to get the goal and play defense.”
Five of Albertus’ seven wins this season have been one-goal games. While Gavan would like to see his offense open things up a bit more, he appreciates the girls hard work to come away with tight wins.
Winning by such small margins has put pressure on the defense, which has risen to the occasion.
Falcons’ stopper Brianna Flores stepped up Thursday.
“(Flores) kept everything in front of her,” Gavan said. “She didn’t stop working hard.”
Flores, Amanda Silvestri, Katie O’Connell and Kristin Lynch, along with goalie Emily Motti, make up a defense that has posted five shutouts this season.
“Our back four have been truly incredible,” Gavan said. “They have the ability to handle everything that is thrown at them.”
Best of the rest: Dava Fortunato had two goals and an assist in Eastchester’s 4-0 win against visiting Scarsdale B. … North Rockland’s Isabel Zayas had a goal and an assist in the Red Raiders’ 2-0 at home against Clarkstown South. … Panas’ Stephanie Geoghegan scored and Haldane’s Cali Schweikhart made 15 saves in a 1-1 draw at Panas. … Sarah Collens and Jordan Amorelli each scored in Pelham’s 2-0 win against Edgemont.
