Somers’ freshman Melina Couzis scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and the visiting Tuskers went on to beat John Jay-East Fishkill 3-1 Wednesday.
John Jay’s Corine Burns scored the game’s first goal in the second half. Hannon Ebert quickly answered for Somers.
“Their goal was a little bit of a wake-up call,” Somers assistant coach Paul Saia said. “When Ebert scored the first goal, it rejuvenated us.”
Couzis, who had an outstanding game at center midfield scored soon after Ebert. Ciara Ostrander followed with another goal and the Tuskers won going away.
The Tuskers opened the season with seven wins before falling to Lourdes on Oct. 3. Since that setback, Somers (9-1) has notched two more wins.
“We came out completely flat in the Lourdes and they hustled their buts off,” Saia said. “We knew this game against John Jay-East Fishkill was big because we want to win the league title … and we knew we had to have this game to do it. They stepped up and played a terrific game.”
