North Rockland came back from a three-goal deficit, edging host Suffern in a 5-4 thriller Tuesday to remain undefeated.
The Red Raiders went into the half down 4-1 and had little momentum. But with less than two minutes gone in the second half, Taylor Aylmer scored what proved to be a momentum-changing goal.
“You can tell that our morale completely change,” said North Rockland coach Vinny Apicella of his players’ reaction to Aylmer’s goal. “They started smiling and they got right back to playing their game.”
North Rockland then put two quick scores on the board to knot the contest before Aylmer scored what proved to be the game-winner off a Nya Rivera pass with eight minutes to play.
Two minutes later, Suffern’s Tatiana Cruz, who already had two goals, had a chance to tie the game. She and North Rockland goalie Shannon Robinson charged for the ball in the box and collided. The ball popped up, clearing the crossbar by only a few inches.
That was Suffern’s last real chance as North Rockland claimed its 10th win of the season.
“It was a very important learning experience for the kids,” Apicella said. “When you’re down, just keep pushing. And you can come out with the win.”
Nicole Aylmer, Rivera and Amber Alfonzo had North Rockland’s other goals. Robinson had four saves.
Michelle Follini and Katelyn Cordero each had 12 saves for the Mounties.
