Since the first day of the season, Harrison has focused on communicating with the younger players that make up most of its roster. On Monday, when the Huskies hosted Port Chester, freshman Erin Nelson responded to the messages her captains had communicated to her.
Nelson led her team to their first win of the season in a 2-0 victory over Port Chester.
Huskies Coach Jon–Erik Zappala has stressed the importance of his team keeping their heads high in spite of what the 0-5 record and scores showed.
“It was really nice to see a young player step up,” Zappala said. “We’ve been playing very well. We have just been having trouble finishing, but hopefully today we came out of the hole.”
Zappala looks to the captains on his team to lead younger players. During Monday’s game senior Hallie Gersten who doesn’t have the title of being a captain, exhibited strong leadership in her play and on the sidelines.
Gersten had a throw-in pass to assist Nelson on one of her goals.
“She is striving for more play,” Zappala said. “She is a real leader and mentor to the young athletes.”
For Zappala witnessing his team earn the win last night was a well-deserved result for the team who has focused on making the scores reflect the hard work they put in at practice.
“I haven’t in all of my years of coaching boys or girls seen older athletes take the younger athletes as equals,” Zappala added. “They all pitch in and do their share. The records don’t always demonstrate how well you are doing, but after the win they had a little more fire and hopefully the momentum will carry on.”
