Behind the play of Monica DiDonato and Anna Hughes, Eastchester held off visiting Dobbs Ferry 5-3 Monday.
DiDonato, a senior, had a hat trick and an assist.
“Monica’s just so calm with the ball,” Eastchester coach Frank Fiore said. “She played really well. She controlled the middle with Anna Hughes. She opened up passing lanes for everyone and it gave others a chance. Every time she has the ball, we have such a confidence to see that she’s multidimensional. She can shoot the ball herself, she can dribble, she can contribute to the forwards. We know that something good is going to come out of it.”
Hughes, a junior, had a goal and an assist.
“Her and Monica work great together,” Fiore said. “They’ve been playing together for the last three years. This isn’t the first time they’ve touched the ball together. They’re comfortable playing together. They know each other’s actions before it happens. Anna and Monica are just all over the field going at a 150 percent.”
Eastchester took a 3-0 lead into halftime. Dobbs Ferry was able to answer, scoring three goals in the second half. But the play of Theresa Giglio (14 saves) was key in the eyes of Dobbs Ferry coach Deena Mehran.
“She came up huge,” Mehran said. “Unfortunately on the rebound, we weren’t quick enough to get the ball. The girls were amazing. Our second half, they never gave up and that’s the type of team we are. We play to the last second. They are going to give 150 percent and that’s what I love about this team.”
Alyssa Chipelo, Shannon O’Halloran and Natalie Quintero scored for Dobbs Ferry.
