We keep rolling here with team previews as the season is rapidly approaching. Next up is Class B Rye Neck. The Panthers had a heartbreaking finish to the 2012 season, losing to third-seeded Blind Brook with two minutes left in double overtime in the first round of sectionals.
You can bet that will be on the mind of the 10 returners with the start of the season.
Here is Rye Neck coach Susan Hannon’s thoughts on the upcoming season.
RYE NECK PANTHERS
Coach: Susan Hannon (Second season)
Last season’s record: 4-8-3
Playoffs: Lost to Blind Brook in first round of sectionals.
Key returners: Ashley Abbatantono, Sr., midfield; Tiffany Aznar, Sr., defense; Alyssa Barchetta, Sr., midfield; Samantha Bradley, Sr., midfield; Amanda Leira, Sr., defense; Sarah O’Brien, Sr., defense; Rachel Novick, Jr., Defense; Kayla Pugliese, Jr., forward/keeper; Lauren Vallarelli, Jr., Forward; Cassie Sterbens, So., Midfield.
Newcomers: Offense: Allison Baal, Kayla Casas, Jasmine Reyes. Defense: Sabrina Kates, Annie Masciopinto. Keeper: Sabrina Albanese
Coaches notes: Last year’s tough sectional loss has lit a fire under the returning 10 players. Our defense was solid towards the end of last season, although we will miss all-section honorable-mention keeper Rehema Ulli. Two capable keepers will fill her spot – Kayla Pugliese and Sabrina Albanese. On offense, Vallarelli returns as our top goal scorer while Cassie Sterbens will return to the lineup after an injury knocked her out for most of last year. We have a lot of depth and experience up and down the field and will use this to our advantage – keeping fresh legs on the field at all times. I’m also excited to see our six new dynamic sophomores perform as we raise our level of play.
