Continuing with our team previews, next up we have last season’s Conference I League B champions, the John Jay Indians. Defending the league title will be no easy task with the graduation of second-team all-state pick Hannah Wear and all-section selections Ilaria Fabbri and Sofia Corelli (honorable mention). Although the Indians remain in the same league, they are joined by Class AA schools Mahopac and Carmel, along with Class A rival Yorktown.
However, if anyone could handle new challenges it’s the Indians’ coach Paul Smith, who has been at the helm for nearly three decades and captured his 300th win last season.
So without ado, the John Jay team capsule.
JOHN JAY INDIANS
Coach: Paul Smith (29th season)
Last season’s record: 11-1-4
Playoffs: Lost to Byram Hills in sectional quarterfinals
Coaches notes: This year we return 13 players from last year’s squad. Our tryouts have produced a team of 20 players with seven new players to the varsity program. We return two all-league players: forward Bailey Monaco (second leading scorer) and returning goalkeeper Rachel Mizrahi, who are also our captains for this year (both seniors). All League honorable mention players Erin Donnery, a center mid, and Athena Manzino, a center back, (they too are seniors). Other returning starters are senior Sasha Puglisi, an outside mid, and junior Abby Silverstein, a forward. Seniors Hanna Bocklet and Aliz Pozniak were key contributors at midfield who are expected to expand their roles, as well as fellow senior Kristie Houlihan at fullback, junior forward Karen Beaty and sophomore midfielder, Georgia Grzywacz.
The strength of this team is its senior leadership and experience blending with a group of younger players with great potential. We again hope to compete for a league championship in a new league with all Class AA teams and hopefully do well in the sectional tournament. There are currently a couple of girls who are close to committing to college programs for next year.
