Welcome, one and all, to the start of the 2013 girls soccer season. While things don’t technically get underway until Monday when teams can officially start practicing, I figured there is no reason why we can’t get things rolling a little bit early. After all, waiting was never my strong suit.
One thing I’ll be doing on the blog as a way of introducing all the teams is posting a brief preview capsule filled out by their coach. It’s a nice way to get acquainted with all the teams before things get underway.
So it seems only fitting that we start things off with one of the sectional champions from last year. Haldane is coming off its second-straight Class C sectional title. The Lady Blue Devils return a good portion of their squad, graduating only three seniors. With the return of all-state honorees Jess Harrison (third team) and Cali Schweikhart (fourth team), Haldane should be a force again in Class C.
P.S.-In case the shiny, polyester jerseys didn’t tip you off, that photo is a bit old school. It is Throwback Thursday after all.
HALDANE LADY BLUE DEVILS
Coach: Gary Van Asselt (7th season); Steve Schweikhart (asst.)
Last season’s record: 12-4
Playoffs: Lost to S.S. Seward in regional semifinals
Coach notes: We graduated three seniors last year from a roster of 22. Hopefully we have a full complement back this season. We have 11 seniors coming back, led by two all-section selections Jess Harrison and Cali Schweikhart. Jess is center mid, and Cali is our keeper. We allowed 11 goals total last year led by seniors Emma Jacoby, Samantha Heanue and Sam Lisikatos, who takes a break from her hoops and softball commitment to enjoy soccer. Up top on attack we have Allie Monteleone (Jr.), Kate Lahey (Sr.), Bri DiFrancesco (Sr.) and Bailey McCollum (So.) scoring for us. In the middle we have Izzy Jimenez (Sr.), Missy Lisikatos (Fr.), Nicole Pidala (Sr.) and Sarah Jacoby (Jr.). Being a Class C team we play all big schools during the season and don’t see a C school until the playoffs. We look forward to being a competitive team this year and good luck to all student athletes at every level and every sport.
